I have recently gotten back into this album, mainly because of “Rain Smell” being such an awesome summer song. This album rules and evokes a lot of emotions in me, even though the lyrics are so simple - the music is enough to keep a mathematician busy for weeks. Check this album out, if you happened to miss it last year.
I can’t go to this year’s BOMB Fest, but that doesn’t mean I can’t tell all the other WQAQers which bands they absolutely have to see! I’ll break this down as best I can…
FREE ENERGY - B.O.M.B. Pavilion Stage, 12:20-1:05
"Stuck on Nothing" was one of my favorite records of last summer. I think it was Phil who described them as an arena-rock band with a slacker attitude, and that’s as good a description as I can come up with! They put on a fun, energetic show that’ll kick your day off right, just be sure to show up early enough to see ‘em! (Listen)
THE GURU - B.O.M.B. Pavilion Stage, 2:20-2:50
Gotta represent CT locals! These guys are about to release their first full-length record, and based on what I’ve heard so far, it’s going to be awesome! Check out the first single “Arizona” at their Bandcamp page.
TITUS ANDRONICUS - B.O.M.B. Pavilion Stage, 3:05-3:50
Huge, literate, passionate, folky punk from New Jersey. I’ve seen them a few times now and they’ve yet to disappoint, especially after the release of last year’s phenomenal “The Monitor.” (Listen)
REAL ESTATE - Viva La B.O.M.B. Stage, 5:10-6:00
If you’re getting worn out from the sun by 5pm and need to take a breather, absolutely pop over and check out this set. I’m a sucker for shoegazey guitar noodling, which these guys have in spades. (Listen)
HEALTH - B.O.M.B. Pavilion Stage, 5:50-6:40
I saw these guys last summer at Music Hall of Williamsburg and they absolutely tore the roof off the place. They’re hands down one of the LOUDEST bands I’ve ever seen, and while I’m not sure how that’ll translate to a huge stage, it’ll be a sight to see regardless. For fans of noisy, abrasive, visceral rock that will rattle you straight to your core. (Listen)
GEORGE CLINTON & PARLIAMENT/FUNKADELIC - B.O.M.B. Pavilion Stage, 9:00-10:30
I hope I shouldn’t have to explain why you need to see P-Funk. You’re already going to be there, you might as well swing by! (Listen)
PORTUGAL. THE MAN - B.O.M.B. Pavilion Stage, 1:50-2:35
I’ve been following this band since their inception in 2006, and they’ve managed to put out a record every year since. While they typically play a unique psychedelic brand of indie rock complimented by John Gourley’s unmistakable tenor, their live show incorporates a lot of jam band elements that would normally totally piss me off. This is definitely one of the acts I’m most bummed about missing, as I haven’t seen them since the release of 2009’s insanely good “The Satanic Satanist.” Don’t miss them!!! (Listen)
MAN MAN - Budweiser Stage, 6:05-6:55
I think I saw Man Man last in 2007, when they were on tour opening for Modest Mouse and, if the show I saw was any indication, completely blowing them away every single night. Their new record “Life Fantastic” just came out and it’s a doozy, with all the spastic instrumentation and general insanity of the previous records. (Listen)
SHPONGLE PRESENTS THE SHPONGLETRON EXPERIENCE - Budweiser Stage, 8:30-10pm
I don’t know what this is, but just look at it. Again, you’re already going to be there, you might as well check it out!
…Temporarily! We’ll be back and better than ever at the start of the Fall 2011 semester, with a brand new management staff, new music, new concerts, and new tickets and goodies to give away.
Thank you, everyone, for an absolutely fantastic and successful year. Be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook so you don’t forget to remember us when we come back into your lives (and into your hearts).
Also, later today… a little sneak preview of some of the free goodies we’ve got for next semester. You’re welcome in advance.
To the overnight Wednesday DJ who keeps turning the station volume up to 15 so we can be heard for miles (or possibly just the upstairs bathrooms in the student center) when we walk in on Thursday mornings…
WQAQ is flattered by your unbridled enthusiasm. <3
During our last meeting of the semester so many people had so many nice things to say about all the other members of WQAQ. Although it was terribly sad to say good-bye to all the seniors I just want to thank you for everything you’ve done while you’ve been here.
All of you have been tireless dedicated to the station for the past 4 years and we, the underclassmen, can not image the station without you. The station has become our home and losing you guys feels like losing our parents. When I first joined the station I saw you guys as mentors, then friends, and I feel like working with you has changed us into something more than that. I can honestly say that I consider all of you my best friends and would do anything to help you at anytime.
I’m sure you know that a lot of people here consider us a “hipster cult”, and for the amount of flannel most of us own, they might have a point. But either way, I’m glad I drank the Kool-Aid, because it’s probably the only thing thats kept me alive.
DID YOU THINK WE WERE DONE GIVING AWAY B.O.M.B. FEST TICKETS? If you did, you were all kinds of wrong.
All week long, we’re running the same contest as last week; every day until Friday, we’re going to post a new song clip from a B.O.M.B. Fest artist. All you have to do is go here and tell us who it is. Each day you do this correctly, you are entered into a drawing to win B.O.M.B. Fest tickets!
That being said, if you can name the artist in this clip, head on over to our “B.O.M.B. Fest” tab and tell us who you think it is! We want to give you free tickets.
Reblog this post. Maybe your friends will take you with them if they win… Only one way to find out!

Reblog this post! Maybe your friends will take you if they win.
Congratulations! By reading this post, you are among the very first outside of the band’s friends and family to find out about Chicago-based indie band, Sharpless. You’re welcome in advance for the hipster cred.
Started by Jack Greenleaf, Sharpless was born in February to turn Jack’s pre-written and recorded music into a six-piece live performance, playing their first full-band set this past Saturday.
Sharpless, the debut LP, is available for download on Bandcamp. You can also follow the newborn band on Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook. Welcome to the music world, Sharpless!
Day 2 of our B.O.M.B. Fest 2011 ticket giveaway has arrived.
Can you name this B.O.M.B. Fest artist? If you can, go here to tell us who it is and enter yourself to win a pair of tickets to B.O.M.B. Fest 2011, featuring Weezer, Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, Best Coast, Wavves, Dum Dum Girls, The New Pornographers, and many, many more.
You’ll be given another chance to win every day this week, so follow us on Facebook and Twitter so you don’t forget!
(Oh, and P.S. - Monday’s answer was Wavves. Good job to everyone who got it right!)
"Trains and Tracks," the oh-so-rad single off the upcoming An Horse album Walls which comes out on April 26! I love this band. Their lyrics aren’t the most profound, but lead vocalist Kate Cooper sings with the kind of conviction and sincerity that you can feel in your bones. And everything they do is just… fun.
An Horse are opening for Alkaline Trio on April 29 @ Toad’s Place in New Haven, and WQAQ is giving away tickets to the show! Tune in to BCJ Radio on Tuesday, April 26 at 9 PM if you’re interested. (You should be.)
You’ll get a second chance to win on Thursday, April 28 if you listen between 4 and 6 PM. And if you want to see what other kinds of cool tickets you can win from us, check out our “Giveaways” tab!
During the week of April 18th-April 22nd, WQAQ will post a daily song clip chosen from the B.O.M.B. Fest 2011 lineup on our website. Once per day, you may answer our trivia question. Every correct answer gives you another chance to win!
The contest ends at 1 PM on Friday, April 22nd. The winner will be announced on the air at 2 PM that day, so be sure to tune in to 98.1 FM in the Hamden/Cheshire, CT area, or you can listen online at WQAQ.com.
If you don’t win the first week, we’re doing it all again the following week, from April 25th-29th.
Throughout the month of April, WQAQ will be giving away tickets to see bands like Cloud Nothings, Sam Adams, Alkaline Trio, Ted Leo, Forever The Sickest Kids, Of Montreal, and more! Also, three lucky winners will win tickets to the biggest Music and Arts Festival in Connecticut…
That’s right. You can win tickets to all of these shows and more just by listening to our station. Details on exact giveaway dates will follow in the next few days, so be sure to check back with us on Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitter to find out how and when you can win.
In the meantime, click here to win tickets to see Cloud Nothings this Friday at Cafe Nine in New Haven, courtesy of Manic Productions.
We interrupt our regularly scheduled profile of the WQAQ Spring Concert lineup to announce something totally awesome: Jimmy McMillan is coming to Quinnipiac! You may know him best as the leader of The Rent is Too Damn High Party, former gubernatorial candidate for New York state and mayoral candidate for NYC! McMillan has already declared 2012 Presidential candidacy and is a total character.
Be sure to join us on April 21st at 7pm in the Quinnipiac University Grand Courtroom (in the Law School) to discuss America’s problems and what can be done to fix them.
Hey everyone, over the next few weeks we’ll be posting videos and mp3s of all the bands playing at this year’s Spring Concert! Be sure to follow us on Tumblr, Facebook, or Twitter, or keep checking back here for more details!
And don’t forget: public tickets are on sale now at Brown Paper Tickets! Students: we’ll have yours soon!
“On Thursday March 24th my best friend and room mate Mitch Dubey was shot in our own home in a completely unprovoked incident, he was rushed to the hospital but died shortly after. 2 Years prior we threw a benefit show for his family after his father had a tragic snowboarding accident and became…
A great show for a great cause. Please make it out to honor this major player in the CT music scene.
RIP Mitch Dubey. We thank you for your contributions to the music scene we know and love.
