Dinosaur Jr. - Watch The Corners

This new cut from Dinosaur Jr.’s forthcoming LP I Bet On Sky is a slower, more downtrodden affair than their earlier, more aggressive material. That doesn’t mean this isn’t a jam, though. I’m honestly kind of blanking on what else to say. If you haven’t listened to Dinosaur Jr. what are you doing? Remedy that right now.

Also don’t forget to come to WQAQ’s involvement fair today at 4pm until 6pm!

Only a dingus would dislike this Swearin’ Video.

Download their self-titled LP here:

WQAQ isn’t full of dinguses, so obviously we love Swearin’. They’re actually being heavily promoted on our rotation. If you don’t listen to Swearin’, you should. It’s free. Do it. Do it. You wanna be cool, don’t you?

See, peer pressure isn’t all bad!

Frank Ocean - Super Rich Kids (Feat. Earl Sweatshirt)

It’s kind of old hat now, but regardless: this new Frank Ocean is fire. Everything everyone is saying is right. This album rules. This song rules. The production is amazing. The guest feature is quickly becoming one of my favorite things Earl has done and it is definitely the best thing he’s done since his return. If you haven’t listened to channel ORANGE yet, get on that. I suspect we’ll be spinning this heavily come fall.

Color Me Obsessed Screening

Hello friends,

Here at WQAQ, we love music so obviously we love The Replacements. One of our friends had a chance to work on the Replacements centric film “Color Me Obsessed” last summer and there’s a screening of the film in New Haven. Check it:

After a packed screening at Yale last fall, COLOR ME OBSESSED, A FILM ABOUT THE REPLACEMENTS, comes back to New Haven in what many would feel is a more appropriate venue for a film about the most notorious rock band of all time. You can drink, you can scream at the film, you can relive their infamous Grotto show. Hell, it’s Cafe 9. It’s going
to be a rockin’ good time.

And following right after:

THE REPLACEMENTS STINK AND SO DO WE !!! Will be performing after the viewing of “Color Me Obsessed” Featuring Ed Valauskas, Jim Balga, Dean Falcone & MANY Special guests. They will ham-fist (sorry to all the vegetarians) their way through The Replacements catalog and make you want to go home and listen to the real thing.

Cafe Nine, New Haven, CT
Friday July 27
$6

So, if you enjoy The Replacements, music, or supporting local filmmakers, please go see this film.

Now, this is a bit of a personal one. First off, Kevin Wolfring. This man, or kid as I’m more likely to call them, is an awesome up-and-coming comedian and songwriter. He started playing a mean ukelele before it became the cool thing to do. On youtube, Kevin has put out a few real awesome, funny songs; and in person his mind can churn out millions on demand. He’s a real guy to watch.

This song in particular is pretty close to me, and a large number of fans of the show Community. The show, different each week but always funny, is one the best on TV. You have to watch the show, perhaps a whole season of it, to understand. But after watching one of those whole seasons, you have to understand it’s not going to be like that at all next season. Dan Harmon, the mind behind the show, was fired this last weekend, and with him, a lot of the writer quit. NBC is trying to make the show “more accessible,” like a “Two and a Half Men” or “Big Bang Theory.” More accessible can is not better, as any music fan like myself can appreciate. Of course, we, not to mention the actors, want Dan Harmon back, the show won’t be the same without his nitpicking control.

So listen to Kevin Wolfring’s “(I Don’t Want) SIx Seasons and a Movie.” If you’re a Community fan, spread the word, reblog his video, and let it be known that the people who love Greendale College, the Study Group, and Community, want Dan Harmon. If you’re not a fan, watch the show; they just finished season 3. Give it a few episodes, and I guarantee you will be a fan.

And keep an eye on Kevin Wolfring. He’s going places.

Photos: The Hiya Dunes & Great Caesar @ The Space. Hamden CT. 5/14/12

SUNY Purchase all stars The Hiya Dunes played a show last night at The Space along with Great Caesar and recent Frenchkiss Records signees Races. With their frenetic take on reverb-heavy beach rock, The Hiya Dunes earnestly and playfully beckoned the summer weather. Their music sounds like it was meant to be heard on analog tape, so I think it was appropriate that I purchased a casette tape of their new album High Tide. You can download the album for whatever you want to pay over at their bandcamp page.

Afterwards, Great Caesar took the stage with an impressive lineup bolstered by an additional trumpet player. They blew me away the last time I saw them at Quinnipiac’s Festapalooza, and I was even more impressed with their performance last night. The smaller, tighter atmosphere of The Space brought out a more manic energy in them, and their sweaty, emotive rock sound resonated throughout the relatively small crowd. Nevertheless, this band’s music is so loud, brash, and melodically inspired that I have no doubt that it would sound great filling a giant stadium. Their new material sounded excellent, and older tracks like their epic storytelling opener “6:37E, The Tale of Buck Byron” were great as well. Check them out on bandcamp

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to catch Races’ headlining set, but their Frenchkiss debut Year Of The Witch is worth checking out. Listen to it on their bandcamp page

We love your blog, Chris Cappello! Thanks again for coming out to Festapalooza.

FINAL LIST of WQAQ Superlatives!

In an effort not to clog your News & Twitter feeds, here’s the remainder of the 2011-2012 WQAQ Superlative Winners! Thanks to Tom and Gerry, and Scotty, for helping me with these earlier today!

This year at WQAQ has been so much fun, and I’ve had a blast getting to know our management and staff members. They’re the reason everyone was crying at our last staff meeting yesterday, the reason our events were so successful this year, and the reason there are never enough chairs in the station.

THAT BEING SAID:

Best Dancer: Scotty “Ballroom Princess” Wong

Worst Potential Transfer: Tom “SUNY” LoPresto

Best Facial Hair: Gerry “11 out of 10” D’Apollo
