Future of the Left - Stand By Your Manatee

If you don’t listen to Future of the Left yet, you’re really screwing yourself over. This cut off 2009’s excellent Travels With Myself And Another exemplifies why FotL rules the hardest. The music is so loud and grimey and visceral and the lyrics are so explosive. Nothing in this world could take her common shame away / because emma’s mom and dad use plastic forks screams front man Andy Falkous over the writhing motion of the instruments. This band makes me so giddy. They released another solid record this year and I highly recommend checking this band out if you like loud music.

Cloud Nothings - No Future/No Past

Holy lord has this band grown. Last year’s self-titled was full of poppy punk songs and only a handful of slow songs; this song crawls and scratches at your ears. Think Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana melded together in a dark back alley. The raw, emotional buildup heard in the vocals is titillating. I cannot wait to hear more from of this; it is one of the most welcomely accepted maturations of a band I have experienced, since Trophy Scars went bluesy.

EMA - Angelo

New EMA! My love for EMA is unabashed, so I was excited to hear the b-side of her “Marked” single that’s just been released. It keeps that layered noise-folk vibe that she completely owns and features a verse from Oakland, CA rapper Mz’Gorjis in a surprising  twist. The single for “Marked” will be released on November 21.

Sonic Youth - Wish Fulfillment

Dirty (1992)

Sonic Youth is pretty much the perfect band. They struggled early on finding their niche, but once EVOL hit something really stuck.  The band continued their success in the late 80’s to pump out solid album at an alarming rate in the 90’s.  1992’s Dirty found the band adding a lot of pop elements, while still retaining their noise rock roots.  ”Wish Fulfillment” is a song nesting in between the calm and chaotic side of the band in the early 90’s.  It embodies what the early alternative scene in the 90’s meant and connects nicely with the showing of The Year That Punk Broke WQAQ will do Tuesday, October 25th at 7p.m. for its own and QFS’s members.

Weekend - Hazel

Huzzah! Apparently Weekend released a new song last month and a new EP yesterday; both of which I was unaware. But now that I’m informed, I’m super happy. I loved their debut LP Sports, so I can’t wait to hear this new EP. The song above “Hazel” is super catchy and noisy as hell. Enjoy.
