It’s our second week back from spring break, and WQAQ couldn’t be more ready for the remainder of the spring semester! In addition to our upcoming spring concert on April 20 featuring Titus Andronicus, we’re excited to be a part of Quinnipiac’s 3rd annual Big Event.
The Big Event started in 1982 at Texas A&M University as a way for college students to give back to their surrounding communities. It became a Quinnipiac tradition in spring 2010. Students are divided into teams and sent to various locations, ranging from food banks to local schools to public parks and everything in-between, and complete one day of service.
Last year WQAQ had a team of 20 and we spent the day cleaning up Edgarton Park in New Haven. We gave back and had a ton of fun in the process! If you’re a student at QU and weren’t able to sign up this year, I highly recommend being part of a team next spring!

Thank you to everyone who came out to Battle of the Bands last night! Between the rock bands, solo acoustic artists, rap artists, and even a performance during intermission by Quinnipiac’s new a cappella group, there was really something for everyone to enjoy. Congrats to all the winners, including The Midnighters who will be opening for our Spring Concert on April 20th. Woo Hü!
For those of you who weren’t able to make it out, don’t forget to Snag Your Swag! Stop by the station (SC203) to pimp out your eyes with approximately the raddest eyewear in the western hemisphere. You’ll never want to stop rocking them. Ever. Even during cloudy Sundays spent studying for midterms in your apartment.

Happy weekend, everyone!
Young and in the Way - They Should Greet Me with Howls of Execration
For the past week or two, one band has really caught my attention (absolutely slipped under my radar back in 2011). Young and in the Way have a good amount of hardcore tendencies, but it’s best suited as a black metal/sludge metal outfit…and it’s fantastic. Just a bunch of angry guys making really kick ass music.
WQAQ sunglasses are in! Come to Battle of the Bands this Saturday, March 3rd, at 6 pm in Burt Kahn to get a pair! It’s free, and you can see all your favorite Quinnipiac bands.
Why? - By Torpedo or Crohn’s
Why?’s record Alopecia seems to be a staple on my iPod; something I throw on when I don’t know what else to listen to. The penultimate track to the album is the downtrodden, defeated “By Torpedo or Chron’s.” Yoni Wolf is uncompromisingly personal, and the song benefits greatly from that. It’s not self-pitying ever, just observant.
Cheap Girls - Ruby
Cheap Girls’ new record Giant Orange is out today on Rise Records! I’m a huge fan of this band; I love their grungy, fuzzy sound. It’s like if Dinosaur Jr. drank as much as they smoked weed. Their new record rules too, so definitely check it out. They’ll be playing in New Haven on March 8th with the Sidekicks, New Years Revolution, and Dagwood so check that out too!
Odd Future - “Rella
Late post! It’s been a good month for Odd Future fans. While browsing the internet, it seemed they have just released a new song and video from their upcoming LP OF Tape: Vol. 2 (out March 20th through their own label). This is an incredibly strong track featuring Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis, and OF breakout Tyler the Creator. Many people were slightly disappointed in Tyler’s Goblin last year, even though the single “Yonkers” was able to garner him a VMA for “Best New Artist”. Hopefully, this will turn some naysayers around by the time OF Tape comes out. Earl Sweatshirt may not be on there just yet, but this should do for the time being!
