A Great Big Pile of Leaves - “Workeatsleep”

In my previous post I mentioned I first saw AGBPOL when they were opening for Tokyo Police Club in Danbury a few months ago. This was the first song they played, and the song that immediately hooked me on them. Check it out and download it for free on the band’s website!

Trophy Scars

Hell yes. I can’t believe this band is playing on Saturday. They were seriously one of my favorite bands through all of high school…their early EPs showcased the raw emotion and pissed-off energy typical of adolescence. With their first full-length “Alphabet. Alphabets.” I didn’t really know what to expect, but bizarre song-title-name-scheme aside, the band’s evolution from New Jersey basement thrashers to a serious genre-bending mindfuck of a band is one of the more remarkable transitions I’ve ever heard, and they pulled it off with immense style and class.

Singer Jerry Jones’ lyrics are my favorite part of the band, and I find that I often enjoy their records more when reading along to it. Each song becomes a story, and while Jones himself used to be a central character in these tales of woe, subsequent albums saw him breaking away from this mold and introducing a few fictional(?) recurring characters, such as the beautiful and seductive Anna Lucia. Of course, I add the question mark because how fictional these characters are is probably debatable. Jones really bares his soul on these records, detailing loves, losses, and even suicide attempts in unflinching detail. However, he looks not for pity, but instead speaks of growing and changing and overcoming all of life’s challenges, no matter how insurmountable they may seem.

The above track, “Botanicas,” comes from the record “Bad Luck,” their most recent full-length effort. Again, I recommend listening to the song while reading the lyrics, but that’s entirely up to you. Be sure to check them out this Saturday at 6:30pm in Burt Kahn Court! QU students can get tickets from our promo table in Tator Hall all week (11am-4pm daily!), everyone else click here!
