Now, this is a bit of a personal one. First off, Kevin Wolfring. This man, or kid as I’m more likely to call them, is an awesome up-and-coming comedian and songwriter. He started playing a mean ukelele before it became the cool thing to do. On youtube, Kevin has put out a few real awesome, funny songs; and in person his mind can churn out millions on demand. He’s a real guy to watch.

This song in particular is pretty close to me, and a large number of fans of the show Community. The show, different each week but always funny, is one the best on TV. You have to watch the show, perhaps a whole season of it, to understand. But after watching one of those whole seasons, you have to understand it’s not going to be like that at all next season. Dan Harmon, the mind behind the show, was fired this last weekend, and with him, a lot of the writer quit. NBC is trying to make the show “more accessible,” like a “Two and a Half Men” or “Big Bang Theory.” More accessible can is not better, as any music fan like myself can appreciate. Of course, we, not to mention the actors, want Dan Harmon back, the show won’t be the same without his nitpicking control.

So listen to Kevin Wolfring’s “(I Don’t Want) SIx Seasons and a Movie.” If you’re a Community fan, spread the word, reblog his video, and let it be known that the people who love Greendale College, the Study Group, and Community, want Dan Harmon. If you’re not a fan, watch the show; they just finished season 3. Give it a few episodes, and I guarantee you will be a fan.

And keep an eye on Kevin Wolfring. He’s going places.

FINAL LIST of WQAQ Superlatives!

In an effort not to clog your News & Twitter feeds, here’s the remainder of the 2011-2012 WQAQ Superlative Winners! Thanks to Tom and Gerry, and Scotty, for helping me with these earlier today!

This year at WQAQ has been so much fun, and I’ve had a blast getting to know our management and staff members. They’re the reason everyone was crying at our last staff meeting yesterday, the reason our events were so successful this year, and the reason there are never enough chairs in the station.

THAT BEING SAID:

Best Dancer: Scotty “Ballroom Princess” Wong

Worst Potential Transfer: Tom “SUNY” LoPresto

Best Facial Hair: Gerry “11 out of 10” D’Apollo

SINGLE MOTHERS - Hell (Is My Backup Plan)

Ever since finding out about Single Mothers over spring break I find myself unable to stop listening to them. My love for the Hold Steady should be well known at this point; Single Mothers is essentially an hardcore version of The Hold Steady sent from an alternate universe where the consequence of not rocking is death. Make sense? It probably doesn’t until you listen to it. Which you totally should.

A WQAQ week in review…

Because we’ve had one fabulous college radio week.

First of all, thanks again to everyone who came out to Festapalooza last Friday! It was one of the best events WQAQ has hosted in recent history, and featured crowd surfing, beach balls, dancing, broken glasses, and first-pumping. It was magical. Not in a romantic way. But definitely in a college radio/punk rock sort of way. (Thanks also to our staff members who helped set up, and stayed to clean up until 1:30am.)

Check out the event review via Quad News here!

On Saturday, WQAQ management & staff members attended the first annual (?!) student media banquet. General Manager Kyle Murphy impressed everyone with a heart-warming speech, announced that Music Director Benjamin Goodheart had won the election for next year’s GM, and honored other managers with prestigious awards. I won “Most Hummus Consumed in the WQAQ Office.”

Throughout the week our managers hosted info sessions on their positions for staff members who are running for management next year. So far we’ve got an awesome group of contenders. General staff: you don’t want to miss next week’s meeting!

The Guru - Beach Monster

FESTAPALOOZA IS ONE DAY AWAY!

Make sure you come early to see our opening acts, including The Midnighters, Great Caesar, and The Guru! The Guru hail from Connecticut and are sort of surfy, sort of psychedelic, extremely cool/calm/collected, and you’ll like them if you’re fond of things that are fun.

But if you’re working and can’t make the start of the show, do not fret! There will still be tons of awesome music and food for you to enjoy.

See you soon!

A Record Store Day sneak preview!

Replay Records on Whitney Ave in Hamden will be having a midnight opening for Record Store Day (4/21)!

Replay will be open for one hour, starting at 12am. …What? Does that make this the first place in CT where you can buy these releases? YUP. Their final list will be available tomorrow night @ replayrecordsct.com.

If you absolutely can’t make it to the midnight opening because you break your leg or your car gets stolen, they’ll be open normal hours on Saturday from 10am-5pm.

Happy Record Store Day, friends!
